How FD maturity is calculated

A = P × (1 + r/n)n × t
  • P – deposit amount
  • r – annual interest rate ÷ 100
  • n – compounding periods per year (4 for quarterly)
  • t – tenure in years

Example: ₹1,00,000 at 7% compounded quarterly for 5 years matures to about ₹1,41,478. The effective annual yield is 7.19%, slightly above the quoted rate because of compounding.

Frequently asked questions

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS when interest crosses the threshold; submit Form 15G/15H if you are eligible.

What about non-cumulative FDs?

Non-cumulative FDs pay interest out monthly or quarterly instead of reinvesting it, so the maturity value is just the principal. This calculator is for cumulative deposits.

Do senior citizens get a higher rate?

Most banks offer senior citizens an extra 0.25%–0.75%. Enter that higher rate to see the difference.
