How SIP returns are calculated

FV = P × [((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)
  • P – monthly instalment
  • i – monthly rate = expected annual return ÷ 12 ÷ 100
  • n – number of instalments

Example: ₹5,000 a month at 12% for 10 years grows to about ₹11,61,695 on ₹6,00,000 invested. With a step-up, the instalment rises by the chosen percentage at the start of each new year.

Frequently asked questions

Are SIP returns guaranteed?

No. Mutual fund returns depend on the market and vary from year to year. Use a conservative expected return and review your plan regularly.

What return should I assume?

That depends on the fund type and your horizon. Look at long-term category averages and the fund’s factsheet rather than recent one-year returns.

Does this account for tax and expense ratio?

No. Enter a return that is already net of the fund’s expense ratio, and remember that capital gains tax may apply on redemption.
